Come hunting in paradise! Mauritius is approximately a 3 1/2 hour flight from Johannesburg, South Africa. Thus making this a perfect add-on safari and vacation while visiting Africa.

Island of Mauritius

The Rusa Deer is a very rare species of deer dating back to the 17th Century on Mauritius Island. Estimates place the Mauritius Rusa Deer herd at approximately 40,000 animals currently. Ivan, our professional hunter, is a born and raised Mauritian Outfitter; having hunted and fished Mauritius for approximately 50 years. No one knows the forest of Mauritius better than Ivan does…and few Captains have logged as much time fishing in Mauritian waters. Rusa Deer season is open from June through November with the rutting season starting in mid-July and lasting until late August.

Island of Mauritius

Mauritius is an island in the Indian Ocean off the southeast coast of Africa. Port Louis is the capitol blending foreign influences offering such sites as the Champs de Mars Horsetrack and the 18th Century Pamplemousse Botanical Garden. Mauritius is known for it’s beautiful beaches, lagoons and reefs. The mountainous interior encompasses the Black River Gorges National Park with rain forests, waterfalls, hiking trails and native fauna such as the Flying Fox, the Pink Pigeon (approximately 12 birds existed in 1986; today due to conservation efforts approximately 470 birds exist) and the Kestrel; once regarded as the world’s rarest bird. By 1974 only 4 individuals were known to exist in the world. However, intense conservation efforts have increased today’s population to approximately 400 birds.

The climate doesn’t vary much here throughout the year. Coastal areas normal low temperatures in Winter (August) are around 68°F climbing to 90°F in Summer (February), while the central areas of the island can have Winter temperatures as low as 66°F to 78°F in Summer.

Mauritius has so much to offer it’s next to impossible to include everything; but to mention a few:

  • Golf – Boasting several 18 hole courses, probably the most famous being the “Le Touessrok Golf Course” on its very own tropical island. Fringed by white sands with a backdrop of green mountains this is truly one of the world’s greatest golf settings. All 18 holes have views of the ocean. There are 9 lakes throughout the course and a number of holes require tee shots across sea inlets to the fairways. Bernard Langer designed the course to challenge advanced players yet remain playable for recreational golfers.
  • Casela Nature Leisure Park – Another one of the many beautiful attractions in Mauritius offering over 150 different species of Birds, Giant Turtles, Lions, Monkeys and beautiful exotic plants and flowers.
  • Did we mention other activities such as surfing lessons, stand-up paddle board, kayak excursions, kyte surfing, diving, waterskiing, glass bottom boat excursions, dolphin viewing, speed boat driving and the blue safari submarine (explore the underwater world in a fully functional submarine).
  • For those of us that prefer keeping things at or above sea level – ATV Rentals, bicycle rentals, shopping, dining, spas, bars, horse racing, zip-lining and animal viewing safaris that include Giraffe viewing, Big Cats viewing, Zebra and other African Plains Game viewing.

*Mauritius is a paradise for deep sea fishing species such as Blue and Black Marlin, Sailfish, Yellow Fin Tuna, Dorado, Barracuda and much more. Click on our fishing page – Africa/Mauritius for this information.

Driven Hunt Group Lunch

There are two types of hunting offered in Mauritius:

  • The first is a Spot & Stalk hunt with rifle or archery.
  • The second is the driven hunt which comprises of approximately forty Mauritian hunters, a hundred hunting dogs and around forty beaters. The hunt is then followed by the traditional lunch and drinks.

Two exceptional hunting grounds are proposed:

  • The first, located in the West, is the largest of the island, with its 5,000 hectares, and is reminiscent of the African Savannah.
  • The second area, to the East of the island, is the birthplace of the Rusa deer, which landed in Mauritius in the 17th century. Covering an area of 3,500 hectares, this area produces the most beautiful trophies of the island thanks to its luxurious and abundant vegetation.

Testimonials

“Just wanted to drop you a note and let you know how much we enjoyed our trip with Vacances Adventures.  It was a pleasure to meet and hunt with Ivan and Damion, both are true gentlemen and professionals.  We found Mauritius to be a unique and exotic destination with wonderful beaches and stunning scenery.  The hunting territory was both rugged and beautiful and made for challenging stalking.  The quality and quantity of Rusa deer was simply spectacular.  We also had a day on the ocean, and even though we weren’t there during peak fishing season, we still scored on a couple of skipjack tuna and a 200 pound yellowfin.  This was a great add-on to our South African trip.  Overall, a wonderful experience we’d love to do again.”
